Morning By Morning - What We Believe

The Apostles' Creed

The oldest known statement of the Christian faith, the Apostles' Creed dates from very early times in the Church. Scholars believe it was written less than 100 years after the last writings of the New Testament.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
and He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen.

*catholic, lower-case, meaning the church universal, the Body of Christ,
and is accepted by Protestants and Roman Catholics

Summary
The Apostles' Creed continues to be used today much as it was in the past: as a baptismal confession; as a teaching outline; as a guard and guide against heresy; as a summarization of the faith; as an affirmation in worship. It has maintained in modern times its distinction as the most widely accepted and used creed among Christians.
